It was a brisk Saturday morning on October 8 when the 2nd edition of the Rock Valley College Golden Futures 5K Run/Walk was held. A collective group of around fifty participants which included faculty, student athletes and even weathermen, ran to benefit a general scholarship fund providing “Golden Futures” for future and currently enrolled students currently.

The event was coordinated by Dave Costello, a former RVC graduate, who has been the manager of College Communications here at RVC and has worked for public relations for the past 10 years.

“Running in general has become a bigger thing,” said Costello, when asked about what has spurred on such an event now two years in a row. “More and more people have become involved and it’s for a great cause.” Not only has this been for a good cause, it’s efficiency has also been taken into consideration. Sponsors, student athletes from the men’s soccer team and women’s volleyball team, and a DJ that works at Rock Valley all made it affordable for every penny to go towards scholarship opportunities.

For further exposure, Costello invited local media stations to come out and enjoy the event. “The first edition of the race was conjuncted with the fifty year anniversary of Rock Valley College,” said Costello. This in turn allowed for the race to take place annually. The major reasons for the turnout of the participants was that they enjoyed the race because it was for a good cause or they currently work at RVC and knew it would benefit the college greatly.

Whether it was for the social aspect or because they had ties to RVC, this event proved to be a successful one and will definitely produce the same effect it did this year in later years to come.
