The Rockford Icehogs remain winless after 3 games, and will be competing for their first win on Friday, October 18th in a contest with Illinois Lottery Cup rival the Chicago Wolves staged at the BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford. The Icehogs seek to snap the skid of frustrating play.
Head Coach Derek King addressed some key issues with the piggies play after a 3-1 loss to the Laval Rockets. “We are letting the other teams dictate what they want to do. That’s not the way we want to play. We need to tighten up before the Chicago game on Friday. We need to end it earlier, and we need to end it in the neutral zone. We are backing off, not pushing the right direction, and not pushing the puck up the boards, and when you do that you force yourself to play on your heels.” Coach King is looking to shuffle the lines and group some new players together, and hopes some chemistry will spark.
The young Rockford team is looking to the experienced players on the roster for some guidance. First year captain and long-time NHL player Kris Versteeg received high praise from teammates. The 3rd overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, Centerman Kirby Dach, wants to soak up every bit of advice he can from Versteeg. “I want to be a sponge,” says Dach. “I want to learn from these guys, get the ins and outs, and learn what it is like to be an everyday pro. After all, as a hockey player, you’re always looking for ways to improve your game on the ice, but I’d like to learn some skills away from the ice as well. I can always improve.” Veteran Dylan Sikura describes Kris Versteeg as “a legend” and “a voice to be heard.”
